Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
