Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
