The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
